Wetheral

Sitting pretty on the banks of the River Eden

The village of Wetheral is less than 5 miles from the centre of the nearby city of Carlisle and sits prettily on the western side of the River Eden. Across the river from Wetheral is Great Corby and where once a ferry joined these two villages sits Corby Bridge, also known as the Wetheral Viaduct, which carries trains along the Tyne Valley Railway line between Carlisle and Newcastle as well as pedestrians crossing on foot.

Wetheral is considered an affluent village and the sprawling Victorian and Georgian houses built around the picturesque village green and beyond are made from beautiful rich red sandstone. This desirable place to live is home to a village shop, pub, a restaurant or two, a busy hotel, The Crown Wetheral, and local amenities such as a doctor’s surgery, salon and Wetheral Station.

Any visit to Wetheral should include a walk around the village with stops at Wetheral Priory Gatehouse to explore this small gatehouse tower, a hop across the river to catch a glimpse of Corby Castle which is a historic 13th century manor house owned by the Howard family, and a walk along the viaduct. Stroll along the banks of the river and keep an eye out for the infamous Wetheral Caves, above-ground refuges used by the monks of the priory nearby during raids by invading Scots.

Just a short drive away from the vibrant city of Carlisle, Hadrian’s Wall, the Lake District National Park and the North Pennines National Landscape, formerly North Pennines AONB, a stay in Wetheral offers a great rural base from which to do a little or a lot of exploring of this historically important part of Cumbria.
