Longtown

A haven of tranquillity nestled close to the border

Longtown, Cumbria, sits just 3 miles south of Gretna Green and 6 miles north of the city of Carlisle. This lovely town was carefully planned during the 18th century by the local landowners, the Grahams of Netherby who resided at Netherby Hall close by, and we have them to thank for the wide, tree-lined roads and the scenic location on the banks of the River Esk.

Best known for being the home to one of the largest sheep markets in England as well as one of the largest munitions stores in Europe, Longtown Carlisle is large enough to host several shops and a choice of eateries but small enough to feel like a peaceful Cumbrian retreat. The Graham Arms Inn Longtown sits at the centre of the town and offers hot food and comfy beds to visitors to the area. This pretty market town is an excellent base for those who want to walk along the River Esk, visit the historic sites nearby of Carlisle Castle, Hadrian’s Wall and Lanercost Priory.

Longtown also has its own historic significance, as it is just outside of the town that the Battle of Solway Moss was held between the English and the Scottish. The Arthuret church, St Michael and All Angels Church at Longtown, is also reputed to have close ties with the legend of King Arthur.
