The picturesque village of Dalston, Cumbria, is nestled along the banks of the River Caldew and is around 4 miles southwest of Carlisle. A pretty village with a population of around 2,800 people, Dalston is a desirable place to live and to visit. With the bustling city of Carlisle close by, as well as the Solway Coast, the northern Lake District and the Scottish Borders, Dalston is an excellent place to stay for those wanting to explore north Cumbria.
Centred around a pretty village centre, Dalston has a small village shop, a pub The Blue Bell Dalston, a chip shop and a bakery, as well as several independent shops. The village spreads out west from the river and is easily accessible from the north and south. With its old stone buildings, two churches and large garden centre Dalston makes a fantastic place to base yourself during your visit to Carlisle. From Dalston Carlisle, find your way to Carlisle Racecourse where you can catch a race during the season or look out for other exciting events such as open air cinema and car rallies. Also nearby is Watchtree Nature Reserve, an old airport turned nature reserve where you can rent bikes of all shapes and sizes to pedal around the reserve. They also host events throughout the year and are a fabulous place to bring children, with a cosy café, adaptive bikes and fun trails to follow.
Staying around Carlisle, whether at Dalston, Longtown, Solway, Brampton or Carlisle itself offers plenty of opportunity to enjoy local events, whether you’re into theatre, music, food or film. With events for children and families, as well as entertainment for adults, Carlisle and the surrounding areas are fantastic for things to do and wherever you choose to stay you’ll have easy access to plenty that is happening locally.
You can reach Dalston via junction 42 of the M6 or from the A595 from the southwest. Its convenient location makes it a doddle to explore both historic Carlisle and Hadrian’s Wall, the Solway AONB and the beautiful long Cumbrian coastline that stretches to the west, as well as the Lake District, of course. Dalston sits just north of the Lakes, where you can take a short drive to explore Derwentwater and Ullswater as well as the northern fells. Across to the southeast of Dalston is the North Pennines AONB and the rest of the Hadrian’s Wall route which traverses the neck of England.
