Watchtree Nature Reserve is a unique wildlife sanctuary and community hub set in the heart of Cumbria. Spanning diverse habitats—including wetlands, woodlands, meadows, and hedgerows—it supports an array of wildlife, from birds of prey to rare plant species. With accessible trails, bird hides, cycle hire, and educational programs, Watchtree offers a space for all to explore, learn, and connect with nature. Watchtree also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, from conservation volunteering days and guided wildlife walks to family-friendly activities, running events, and seasonal celebrations. Local Area

Watchtree Nature reserve is situated on the Solway Plain, about 6 miles due west of Carlisle and 6 miles north east of the market town of Wigton. The nearest village is Great Orton, about one and a half miles to the west; the hamlet of Wiggonby, half a mile to the south and villages of Kirkbampton and Thurstonfield, about 2 miles to the north. It is situated mainly within the Allerdale District Council, with a small area falling into Carlisle District Council. It lies mostly within the Parish of Aikton, with smaller areas in Great Orton and Kirkbampton Parishes.

How To Find Us

From Carlisle, use the B5307 or A595 from Carlisle. From Wigton, follow the A596. Follow signs for Wiggonby.
